Read our latest Q&A with Emma Hancocks, who recently joined the VH Bio team as a Molecular Biology Technical Sales Specialist!
Describe what your job entails.
The main goals of my job are to liaise and communicate with customers – both existing and potential – to see how VH Bio’s molecular biology products could benefit them and be integrated into their laboratories. I will also be supporting customers’ after sales by being on hand to provide help and advice, training, and troubleshooting as required.
What is your career and/or educational background?
I started my career in 2013 as a Clinical Assistant at Anthony Nolan Laboratories, where I ran several DNA extraction assays to provide samples for HLA typing, as well as ABO blood grouping and virology testing for HCV, HBV, HIV and CMV. During my time here I completed both my foundation and bachelor’s degrees in Healthcare Science. At the end of 2020, I moved to the Microbiology department at Worcester Royal as a Biomedical Scientist, where I spent most of my time in the Molecular Suite running qPCR for SARS-CoV-2 testing.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I am a big foodie so I love going out to eat and trying new things. I also go to the gym a few times a week because it’s all about balance! (Although, I’m not sure ‘enjoy’ would be the word I would use to describe that!)
What is your favourite animal?
Pigs – my absolute dream holiday is to swim with the pigs in Exuma (in the Bahamas).
What was the worst job you’ve ever had?
I’d say I’ve been quite lucky with my previous jobs/work experience – although I did have a paper round when I was younger, which was how I spent my Thursday evenings come rain or shine!
Describe your perfect weekend.
Part of me wants to say a weekend spent with friends and family – lots of food and drinks and laughter. And the other half of me would say to escape to a spa or a lodge in the middle of nowhere for the weekend. I’m thinking of a glass of wine in the hot tub, not a care in the world!
What is your favourite film?
Don’t judge me… but it’s got to be Grease! No matter how many times you watch it, it’s still just as good as the first time! Do I know the words to every song? Absolutely.
What has been keeping you busy during lockdown?
Moving away from my hometown in Surrey up to Worcester!
If you had to eat one meal, every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I’m not sure I’m mentally prepared to answer this question…
If you were stuck on an island what three things would you bring?
I’d take my kindle (with every single book known to man downloaded), a doggo (for companionship and help with hunting food) and, assuming said island is above 20°c, I’d want some SPF too.
